2017-18 Fall HPS ORCHESTRA NEWS

You Had me at CelloThis year is off to a great start. There are some important things you should know about your student’s participation in the orchestra program this year. This note is to inform you of important details to ensure the best experience for your student.

Concerts: Some concerts are free and some require a paid ticket. While parents are not mandated to attend performances it is highly encouraged for them to become involved with their child’s performing arts education. Concert requiring a paid ticket can be found at our ticketing site for upcoming concerts. Go To: hhsorchtickets.ludustickets.com

Concert Schedule: All Orchestra students must attend all concerts of their ensemble for a complete grade. Here is the concert schedule. More details will be added as links to the dates below when they become available. Guide- (HSO = High School Orchestras, 8th = 8th grade Orchestra, All = all orchestras 8 – 12th grade)

Materials for class: In order for your student to be prepared they need to have with them:

  • An instrument in good working order,Pencilns_tuner_photo_violin
  • an extra set of strings,
  • a tuner to have at their stand at all times, TM40
  • a pencil,
  • the school administered music folder with all music,
  • and rock stop for cellos,
  • or a shoulder rest for all violins and violas.

How to dress: In the coming months, the weather outside will get colder. 1532_Randy_ICPMAD_40__49170.1497284166Please dress warmly enough so you can play with out a coat or bulky sweater, or hoodie binding your arms and shoulders. Such larger garments inhibit the flexibility to play. Students will be required to dress in a manner that gives the freedom to play in the correct posture required to perform.

how-often-cut-nails-1Nails: It’s important that nails in the left hand be trimmed to let the finger pad hit and push down the string correctly. Long nails do not allow the finger pad to push down a string correctly and force the finger to collapse. Again students are to keep left-hand finger nails in trim playing condition.

tuxUniform: Your student will be assigned a uniform in the coming weeks. Cleaning / rental fee for this uniform is $10. This fee is due at the time of uniform distribution. Uniforms will not be distributed unless the fee has been paid. Make checks payable to HOPA (Holland Orchestra Parents). Uniforms will be collected at the commencement performance May 29. Guys must provide black socks, black dress shoes, white tux shirt (a white button dress shirt is fine) and black bow tie. Gals must provide nylons, black and dress shoes. No Jewelry may be worn.

Instrument Rental: Cellos and basses, as well as some violins and violas, may be rented from the school, either for sole use at school or to bring back and forth. If you are interested in renting a school instrument please print out the Rental Agreement and submit it with the payment to your director.

Mackinac Island: There is still room for our fall Mackinac Island Trip for the Holland High School Symphony. If your student wants to go please contact Mr.Reikow right away so we can reserve your spot on the trip. 616-494-2260 or jreikow@hollandpublicschools.org.

Remind: For your convenience get the most up-to-date information from our orchestras such as reminders of photo shoots, or school/ rehearsal cancellations. Go To Remind
